Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous painters of all time. His swirling brush strokes and luminous colours shimmer with life. In Loving Vincent many of van Gogh’s iconic paintings come to life, setting the scene for the story of his most productive period in France, his descent into madness and eventual death.
Loving Vincent is an animation, but it’s no Tom and Jerry cartoon. Live actors were filmed against a neutral background and all 65,000 frames were painted in the style of van Gogh by a team of 100 artists. It was a massive project which took over six years to complete. Vincent van Gogh went mad, cut off his own ear and committed suicide, right? Well maybe not. This film explores an alternate scenario which is rapidly gaining acceptance in the art world. The true cause of Vincent’s death may not be what you thought.
Loving Vincent is a visual feast. The paintings of Vincent van Gogh are among the most loved in the world. The shimmering vibrancy of the colours gives them a life which seems to burst from the frame. In Loving Vincentthis energy is given unique expression. You’ve never seen a movie – or paintings – like this before
