Amnesty International, along with the Franklin Palais Team in the Huon Valley, is hosting an awareness-raising and fund-raising community event to mark World Human Rights Day. It is a celebration of the continuing endeavours in the struggle for human rights and the ever-present need to challenge injustice everywhere. Welcome to Country will be by Rodney Dillon, local inspirational Palawa Elder and Indigenous Advisor to Amnesty International Australia. Rodney was previously also the ATSIC Commissioner. Guest speakers: Professor Tim McCormack FAAL - Professor of Law at UTAS and Special Adviser on International Humanitarian Law to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague and Tim is also a Director of World Vision Australia. Iranian Refugee Arad Niksefatms, who spent time in offshore detention on Nauru and now lives in the Huon Valley as a much loved and contributing member of the community. (10 minutes each) Followed by 20 minute Q&A with Rodney, Tim and Arad. Tiffany Eckhardt's song 'Kindness' will take us to Intermission. There will be food for sale provided by Kate Hoorweg. Arad's Persian sweet stall will have delights on offer. Bar and refreshments also available. All invited to visit the Amnesty Write for Rights stall and sign some petitions and write a short note on behalf of those facing great injustice and/or incarceration. Second half will begin with the screening of Robert Alcock's fascinating short film of Nurmuhammad Majid's journey to southern Tasmania to speak of the situation of the Uyghur people, 'Nur Speaks Out'. This will be followed by musicians, Sorin Vanzino and Steve and Marjorie Gadd, story-teller Bert Spinks and the Little Boat Choir will end the evening before 9pm.
